Summary:

In this episode I talk about my experience with setting new years resolutions, and the approach that I now take today.  I've found that moving with the herd and making promises I wasn't going to stick to didn't work for me. PS I hate the term "hack", so hopefully you'll see that I'm using it here a little sarcastically.

Summary:

In this episode I talk to Megan about grief.  We discuss her personal experience with losing her partner and what followed.

Teacher, speaker, and psychotherapist, Megan Devine, has been stirring up our culture’s ideas around grief and loss since 2009. She's the author of the book, It's OK That You're Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn't Understand

Megan is known for her practical, no-nonsense approach to grief, and for her ability to guide people inside some of the most devastating experiences of life and love. While her work is often focused on grief itself, her message is much wider: by acknowledging what hurts, we can all learn to love each other better - no matter what life brings.

Summary:

In this episode I talk to Kelli Walker about her own journey with anxiety and how it led her to now help others recover.  Kelli is one of the only coaches I recommend as her approach really aligns with mine.

Kelli Walker, M.S.N., is a Registered Nurse, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, and former agoraphobe. For over 15 years she struggled with generalized anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks.

Kelli now works as a coach, helping people move past their own anxiety in the way she did: by understanding anxiety's true nature and the ways that we innocently get stuck in the cycle of anxiety, fear, and worry. This understanding allows us to start breaking that cycle.

Kelli is the host of the Not Another Anxiety Show podcast, an author, and has participated in several health and wellness conferences and summits.

Kelli enjoys Nutella, her dogs, world travel, sweat pants, hiking, kayaking and ultimate frisbee.

To learn more about Kelli and her work, visit www.panicandanxietycoach.com or check out her podcast Not Another Anxiety Show in iTunes.

Jul 11, 2017

Summary:

This week I chat with Justine regarding her amazing recover from a traumatic brain injury.  She talks about how she really used writing as a way to rebuild her confidence.

Written by Justine:

In 1990 (I was 19 and living in San Diego with my husband of three months) my car was hit by a city bus as I was driving home from work – I sustained a severe brain injury, I was resuscitated, in a coma, paralyzed, and the doctors thought I wouldn’t recover.

Within a few months I was walking again and my husband and I moved to Iowa where we started our family of 7 kids (doctors also told us we would never have kids after my crash). After we moved I began writing to cope with my severe PTSD, and I began my story about Alexander the Great a few years later.

In the mid 2000s I started college part-time – with my first course being world religions, which helped me understand Alexander’s motivations and was also therapeutic for my mind (I've felt that learning has been calming).

I had become interested in Alexander’s story in the mid '90s after watching a documentary about him because I identified so much with his persistence and perseverance. I kept researching until I was able to integrate his soul into the story I had been working on. I continued college, earned my BLS from The University of Iowa, and I’m now working on a Master’s Degree in Literature through Northern Arizona University.

Justine's book on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Justine-Johnston-Hemmestad/e/B01DHSLN0M/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_3?qid=1499782524&sr=8-3

  • How Justine was involved in a car accident that put her in a coma
  • How she exercises for 2 hours a day as part of her recovery
  • How writing and journaling was something that really calmed her down
  • How writing and learning gave her the courage to persevere
  • How she's gone on to write and be part of 10 books
  • She's now studying for her masters

Summary:

This week we chat with singer/songwriter, Leeroy Stagger about his latest album, Love Versus. We get into talking about everything from Buddhism, to alcoholism, to self-love.

"Born in Victoria, British Columbia and raised on a little island on the very west coast of Canada, Stagger spent most of his youth with his grandparents who exposed him to the world of country music. Having collaborated with one of his icons, Danny Michel, Stagger found commercial success in the song, "Just in Case", which was featured twice on the television hit, Grey's Anatomy. The life of being on the road and touring at a fast pace did not wear easily on Stagger, who at age 26, realized he had an alcohol problem that was affecting his ability to perform with the commitment and heart his songs demanded. Clean and sober since, Stagger has a strong desire to inspire young musicians that they do not have to succumb to the pitfalls of substance abuse, which can be prevalent in a musician's touring lifestyle."

Check out his album here: https://www.leeroystagger.com/

In this episode you will learn:

  • Leeroy’s formative years for his music
  • Started drinking in his early teens
