In this episode I discuss drinking alcohol and how it affects our anxiety.  I also suggest some things that may help if you decide to go ahead and drink anyway i.e. how to manage the hangover.

- Why you shouldn't text when drinking

- Be gentle on yourself when you're hungover

- Realize that you may get an elevated heart beat or irregular heart beat from drinking

Summary:

In this episode I talk to Megan Gallagher about her experience with anxiety. She talks about how she suffered with anxiety as a teenager and many of the things that helped her overcome it.

From ages 6-17, Megan struggled severely with chronic anticipatory anxiety and panic attacks. She craved a place where she could go and feel heard and seen for her struggles. After starting therapy at 13 years old, she began down the path of journaling, EFT tapping, meditation, exercising regularly, establishing morning/nighttime routines and seeing therapists. Now, at 23, she is the role model that she always wanted to be for others. After starting her business at 20 years old, she went to toastmaster public speaking meetings, started a blog, made a Youtube channel and spoke for free at every YMCA and Boys&Girls Club she could find! After three years of hard work, things took off! She landed a TEDx talk and currently travels the Country and speaks at Middle Schools and High Schools about anxiety, loving yourself and being your own advocate in life. She believes that our pain is our purpose and hopes to inspire the younger generation by sharing her story.

This fable really speaks to being patient and being balanced which I think is really important at this time.

Day by day.

Keeping positive.

Doing what we can.

Investing in ourselves.

Not getting to high on hope or to low in despair.

Not focusing too far into the future.

A farmer had only one horse. One day, his horse ran away.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

A few days later, his horse came back with twenty wild horses following. The man and his son corralled all twenty-one horses.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

One of the wild horses kicked the man’s only son, breaking both his legs.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

The country went to war, and every able-bodied young man was drafted to fight. The war was terrible and killed every young man, but the farmer’s son was spared, since his broken legs prevented him from being drafted.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

This meditation is designed to help you through a panic attack or a moment of high stress/anxiety. Listen to this every time you feel anxiety coming on.

  • Stop blaming yourself (1:40)

  • No more avoiding anxiety (2:10)

  • Take anxiety head on (2:18)

  • Look at your anxiety (2:55)

  • Mindful breathing (3:54)

  • Breathe through your nose, not your mouth (5:18)

  • Create a peaceful environment for your anxiety (6:00)

  • Notice where in your body you feel anxiety (7:00)

  • Don’t resist your anxiety (8:30)

  • Be curious about your anxiety (9:25)

  • Know that this anxiety will pass (10:35)

  • Keep breathing and moving (11:23)
