Summary:

In this episode I speak to Dave Asprey from Bulletproof.  We discuss diet, coffee and controlling your biology to stop anxiety.

Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof and author of New York Times bestseller The Bulletproof Diet, is a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur who spent two decades and over $300,000 to hack his own biology.

Dave lost 100 pounds without counting calories or excessive exercise, used techniques to upgrade his brain to an IQ over 150, and lowered his biological age while learning to sleep more efficiently in less time. Learning to do these seemingly impossible things transformed him into a better entrepreneur, a better husband, and a better father.

Dave is the creator of the widely popular Bulletproof Coffee, host of the #1 health podcast, Bulletproof Radio, and author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Bulletproof Diet.

Through his work Dave provides information, techniques and keys to taking control of and improving your biochemistry, your body and your mind so they work in unison, helping you execute at levels far beyond what you’d expect, without burning out, getting sick, or allowing stress to control your decisions.

Here is a link to the Bulletproof Diet Roadmap: https://www.bulletproofexec.com/the-complete-illustrated-one-page-bulletproof-diet/

In this particular episode you will learn (I've also included lots of Dave's great quotes):

- How Dave went from 300 lbs to 200 lbs and was totally stressed out as a young entrepreneur

- How when you're in control of your biology you can stop the anxiety

- What Dave means by "not making enough energy in my head"

- "It's easier to have physical health without mental health, but it's almost impossible to have mental health without physical health"

- Why getting out of bed in the morning is stressful (why cortisol is produced)

- "Anxiety is when you're self generating stress that isn't beneficial of productive for you"

- How there is another pilot in your body that does things before you even think about it

- "Feelings are irrational, in fact they are pre rational"

- How when your blood sugar crashes it affects your eyes and brain first.  It then sends out adrenaline to raise blood sugar followed by cortisol

- What Dave means by "automated systems from lizards and children"

- Physical anxiety vs emotional anxiety.  "I can feel the symptoms of anxiety in my chest, I just don't believe them when they tell me I'm going to die"

- "I'm uncomfortable, but I'm not going to die"

- Why coffee makes us anxious

- How what you did 2 days ago can give you anxiety today (Dave talks about gluten)

- What birth trauma is and why this makes us see threats where other people don't

- What is it about coffee that makes the anxiety

- Why Dave only gets hot water from Starbucks

- What about decaffeinated coffee

- What is Bulletproof coffee

- What ketosis is and why it's beneficial for us

- Why food causes inflammation and what the link to anxiety is

- If you're going to race against anxiety why it's so important to fuel yourself properly

- I ask Dave what legacy he'd like to leave

Summary

In this episode I talk about the 3 C's and how you can start using them today.

What do I do when my Anxiety Shows up?

Curiosity, Courage & Compassion.

Do the 3 C's

Write the 3 c's on your hand in the morning when your doing your journaling as a reminder.

It's essentially how I ask people to respond to anxiety when it shows up.

CURIOSITY

i.e. what's the message here ? Am I safe ? I wonder why it's here ? This engages your pre frontal cortex.  Anxiety is kicked off by your croc brain (amygdala) and this allows us to pattern interrupt and bring a question to the table.

This breaks the fear cycle.

COURAGE

Be prepared to feel the feelings and be uncomfortable until it passes.  Get to know your anxiety, embrace it.

COMPASSION

Anxiety sufferers are amazing at beating the shit out of themselves with guilt, shame, worry and embarrassment.

Realize it's not your fault, be gentle on yourself.  And let it pass.

He is the founder of madinamerica.com, a website that features research news and blogs by an international group of writers interested in “rethinking psychiatry.”

“The American Psychiatric Association in concert with the drug industry basically promoted to us a false story.” (22:00)

“They did not find that people with depression had low serotonin levels before they went on anti-depressants. They found that when you go on an anti-depressant it drives your body into a sub-serotonergic state. You end up with the very thing hypothesized to cause depression in the first place." (23:51)

"I don’t know any other area of medicine where you can say ‘you have this problem’ when you don’t have it.” (26:00)

“Every day you are taking a pill that says you are not quite right. That’s a horrible internal message.” (33:58)

Apr 19, 2019

Summary:

In this episode I outline some of the key takeaways from being present last weekend at the retreat. I also share a poem which really resonated with me this week.

Here is the poem:

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

— Jalaluddin Rumi, translation by Coleman Barks

Feb 23, 2019

Summary:

As I’m traveling this week and next I wanted to share a couple of my favourite interviews from the archive.

In this episode I speak to Mark Manson about his point of view around anxiety and growth.  We talk about relationships, personal growth and generally not giving a f*ck.

Mark Manson is a blogger, author and entrepreneur. He specializes in writing personal development advice that doesn't suck. His website MarkManson.net is read by over 2 million people each month. He lives in New York City.

Links:

To order Marks book go here: https://markmanson.net/books/subtle-art

In this particular episode you will learn:

- How anxiety is an affect and not a cause

- “You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do.” David Foster Wallace

- How when we share we get the opportunity to realize we are not alone

- How having anxiety allowed Mark to realize it couldn't get any worse

- How anxiety can be tied to significance

- Why it's important to options

- How we often can get ahead of ourselves in relationships and life in general

- How neither good emotions or bad emotions last

- What if I've peaked?

- "Problems never go away they get solved and upgraded"

- "Happiness comes from solving and improving upon our problems" (not avoiding them)

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

SUBTLETY #1: NOT GIVING A FUCK DOES NOT MEAN BEING INDIFFERENT; IT MEANS BEING COMFORTABLE WITH BEING DIFFERENT

SUBTLETY #2: TO NOT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ADVERSITY, YOU MUST FIRST GIVE A FUCK ABOUT SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN ADVERSITY

SUBTLETY #3: WE ALL HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF FUCKS TO GIVE; PAY ATTENTION TO WHERE AND WHO YOU GIVE THEM TO
